How to Protect Carpet

We discussed how to protect hardwood floor in our last post. The post provided tips on how to maintain the quality of hardwood flooring in a home for several years.

In today’s post, we will provide the same types of tips for carpet. If you protect your carpet and care for it, your carpet should last between 10-15 years or longer.

Here are tips to protect carpet:

#1. Stain-Resistance

You should purchase carpet that comes with a built-in manufacturer’s protectant or stain-resistance technology. This protectant will repel moisture and stains for around 12 months after the carpet is installed.

After 12 months, you will want to apply a new protective layer over the carpet. This can be done by a local carpet cleaning service in Santa Clarita, CA. We recommend Healthy Choice Chem-Dry for this service.

A new layer of protectant every 12 months will help to prevent permanent stains and major damage to carpet.

#2. Area Rugs

You should place area rugs over the traffic areas in a room. This way the area rugs receive the brunt of the wear, tear and traffic and the carpet underneath is safe. You can either hire a rug cleaning service to clean the rugs each year or purchase new ones from time to time for a cheaper cost than replacing the carpet.

#3. Vacuuming & Cleaning

Be sure to vacuum your carpet 4-5 times every week and schedule professional carpet cleaning at least once every 12 months. Vacuuming helps prevent matting and deep cleaning will remove soil and bacteria under the surface and prevent the deterioration of the carpet pad and fibers. #4. Rearrange Furniture

You should rearrange the furniture in your home every few months. This will create different traffic paths throughout a room and throughout your home so that no one single area of traffic receives all of the wear and tear and soiling.

#5. Remove Your Shoes

Don’t wear shoes indoors or let guests wear their shoes indoors. The bottoms of shoes bring in a ton of germs and dirt from pavement, concrete and public floors. This dirt is then trapped inside of your carpet and it will do damage over time.

#6. Wear Socks

Don’t allow bare feet in your home either. You should wear socks or slippers in your home. The oil on the bottom of feet is very bad for carpet and will lead to soiling and other stains.

#7. No Pets

Pets and carpet aren’t a good combination. Carpet in a home without pets will last much longer. If you do have pets, try to leave them in rooms with hardwood floor or tile floor whenever possible.

These tips will help protect carpet for several years and ensure you receive the most value from your carpet purchase. You should also purchase a durable carpet fiber such as nylon and avoid polyester if you want the carpet to last for a long time.

If you are just installing the carpet for resale value then you should consider a bold and colorful polyester fiber for the home.
