Types of Table Lamps for Your Home

We’ve discussed floor lamps and chandeliers in great detail and now it is time to discuss the most common form of home lighting, table lamps. Table lamps are stylish, versatile and affordable and very popular.

Most homes have at least one table lamp in every room but how do you know what type of table lamp is right for each room?

Let’s discuss the different types of table lamps and how to decorate with them throughout your home:

You want a table lamp to be stylish but it needs to provide the correct amount of light for the room too. For general lighting in a room, consider placing two table lamps on top of a console table or one each on coordinating side tables.

If the room doesn’t have a chandelier or floor lamps, you will need several table lamps placed throughout it to provide enough light for larger rooms. Most rooms will need a minimum of two or three table lamps for sufficient lighting.

A table lamp with an adjustable shade or a downward arch will provide more focused light. You will often use this type of light on a desk or near a reading area in your home. If you use a traditional table lamp for this purpose, be sure the bottom of the lamp shade rests at eye height and that the bulb and socket are not exposed.

The size, shape and style of the table lamp should complement and balance the rest of the room. A table lamp should complement furniture, art and rugs and flooring but likely will not be a focal point of the décor.

A modern room should have a modern table lamp, whereas a traditional room should have a more traditional table lamp. Also be sure that the finishes and base of a lamp match other finishes throughout the décor.

The lamp shade is probably the most stylish aspect of a table lamp. There are drum, cone, pagoda and cylinder lamp shade shapes to choose from, each with their own style.

A lightweight fabric shade or a shade with a lighter color will provide more light in a room.

You can even update the lamp shades on a regular basis to switch up the décor and look of a room from time to time. This is a very cheap way to add new looks and variety to the appearance of your home.

You can now confidently choose the correct type of table lamp for the rooms in your home to add light and style to your living space.

Types of Chandeliers: Which One is Right for You?

In our last post, we discussed all of the types of floor lamps and how to decorate your home with the correct lighting. In today’s post, we will cover a more luxurious form of home lighting.

A chandelier is synonymous with luxury but in 2017 there are several models and styles suitable for contemporary and traditional décor. A chandelier isn’t just for dining rooms anymore either. You can display a chandelier in a living room or an entry way too.

Learn how to decorate with chandeliers in your home and which type of chandelier is right for you:

You should consider the size of the chandelier and the room before you purchase one for your home. You can purchase a mini chandelier for bedrooms or hallways to add a little light and décor to rooms with minimal natural light.

You can purchase a medium size chandelier for a living room, dining room, bedroom or kitchen. This size of chandelier creates a beautiful focal point for a room.

A large chandelier is excellent for stairways and rooms with high, vaulted ceilings. These large chandeliers are the most famous but also the most expensive and not all homes can accommodate them.

You can determine the best diameter of a chandelier to purchase for a room if you add the width and the length of the room together. Now replace that measurement with inches instead of feet and you will have the perfect diameter for a chandelier in that room.

Your chandelier should match your lifestyle and design aesthetic. You can choose from modern chandeliers, formal designs and traditional styles depending on the décor and style of your home.

After you choose the chandelier you want, you need to hang it.

Be sure the bottom of the chandelier is at least 28-32 inches above the table surface in a dining room and 9 feet above the floor at the bottom of a stairwell.

Don’t hang a chandelier so low someone could hit there head on it and don’t hang it so low over a table that it could block someone’s view across the table.

These tips should prepare you to buy the perfect chandelier for your home and hang it the correct way so that it truly brightens a living space.

Types of Floor Lamps: How to Choose the Right One?

A floor lamp serves two purposes in a room. The most obvious purpose for a floor lamp is to brighten a room and provide additional light. The other reason is to decorate the room and add style and ambiance.

There are several types of floor lamps to choose from. Learn below how to choose the right floor lamp for your room:

You need to first decide what the purpose of the room is. If the room is a living room or an entertaining room, the lamp should provide overall light and beautify the room. If the room is an office or workspace, you will want the lamp to provide a more concentrated task lighting in the space.

Torchiere Floor Lamp

A torchiere light is a common choice for living rooms and bedrooms. A torchiere floor lamp adds ambient light to a room with the light pointing upward and shining onto the ceiling of the room and reflecting off of the walls in the room. You will often see a torchiere lamp used in more contemporary décor.

Task Floor Lamp

This type of floor lamp points downward on a space to provide a brighter, more-focused light. You would use a task light in a home office or in a reading space. You can even purchase a task lamp with multiple cans for lighting for multi-direction light or an even more focused concentration on one area.

How to Choose a Style?

The task or torchiere floor lamp you choose should complement the décor of the room. If you have more traditional furniture in the room, consider decorating the lamp with a bold lamp shade or a lamp shade with a fun pattern. Otherwise, if the décor or paint color is already bold, consider a more traditional lamp shade.

If the room doesn’t receive much natural light or doesn’t have many other lamps throughout it, consider buying a wider lamp shade that is made of linen to let more light shine through the shade and into the room.

I recommend purchasing a LED bulb for the lamp since it will provide a brighter light and is more energy-efficient.

This information should help you to decide which floor lamp is right for your room and how to decorate and brighten a room with the correct lamp.
